Brood parasitism is a strategy in which one bird lays its eggs in another bird's nest and leaves the hosts to do all the work of incubation and feeding. Only about 1% of bird species are obligate brood parasites, but they can dramatically reduce the nesting success of their neighbors.

Classic culprits include cowbirds in North America and cuckoos in Europe and Asia, which often target much smaller songbirds. For the parasites, skipping nest building and chick rearing means they can lay more eggs in more nests each season.

How Impostor Eggs and Chicks Fool Good Parents

To keep host parents from catching on, brood parasites have evolved some astonishing tricks. Many cuckoos and other parasites lay eggs that closely match the color and pattern of their hosts' eggs, sometimes so well that even biologists struggle to tell them apart at a glance.

Their chicks are just as crafty. Some, like the European Cuckoo, hatch early and push host eggs or nestlings out of the nest; others simply grow faster and beg louder, monopolizing every insect delivery the foster parents bring. Why Hosts Don't Just Toss the Odd Egg

Given the cost, why would any bird raise a chick that clearly is not its own? Sometimes, they actually try to fight back: many hosts mob adult parasites, hide their nests, or eject strange-looking eggs. Other times, the safest move is to accept the loss and care for the impostor anyway.

Big reasons hosts still feed foreign young include the danger of mistakes, physical limits, the threat of retaliation, and the slow pace of evolution. Rejecting your own egg by accident is worse than raising one parasite chick, so natural selection tends to favor caution. Some small birds simply cannot grasp and remove a large parasite egg from the nest. In some systems, parasites destroy nests that eject their eggs, so accepting the intruder may be the least bad option. And in places where parasitism is relatively new or rare, host defenses may not yet have caught up.

Research on cowbird hosts, for example, shows that some species with large enough bills routinely reject cowbird eggs, while others almost always accept them despite the cost, hinting at both physical limits and history-dependent defenses in play at different sites studied in eastern North America. Biologists still debate whether many accepting hosts simply have not yet evolved better defenses, or whether raising the occasional parasite is sometimes the least risky option.

Alarm Calls, Mobbing Squads, and a Shared Language of Danger

Hosts are not helpless. In many regions, different species have converged on a similar whining alarm call when they spot a brood parasite near their nests, and neighbors of multiple species respond as if their own nests are in danger. Spotting Brood Parasitism in Your Backyard

For backyard birders, one of the most striking sights is a tiny songbird feeding a chick that seems two or three times its size. In much of North America, that oversized youngster is often a Brown-headed Cowbird, raised at the expense of its foster siblings. Learning the usual size and shape of local species' young makes these odd pairings stand out once you start watching carefully for nesting behavior and feeding trips, just as you would when using subtle clues to find nests near your home.

There is a conservation twist, too. Cowbirds and many other brood parasites are native parts of their ecosystems, but they can be especially hard on already vulnerable songbirds, and climate change is scrambling the timing between parasites and hosts in new ways described for cuckoos and cowbirds in recent climate-focused brood parasite studies. For backyard naturalists, the best role is quiet observer: enjoy the marvel of these strange family arrangements, report what you see through citizen-science projects when possible, and protect good habitat so hosts have the best chance to outsmart the cheats next season.
